UFV Cascades defeat University of Manitoba Bisons, 75-33, win first Canada West game of season

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons, 75-33, to win their first Canada West conference regular season game of the 2011-122 campaign. The Cascades record improves to 1-2 with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen coming to the Envision Athletic Centre tomorrow night.

The Cascades came out strong in their home opener at the Envision Athletic Centre and quickly establish a double digit lead which grew to 12 points after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Cascades played tremendous defense holding the Bisons to five points as they headed into the break up by 18 points. Tessa Klassen, a Winnipeg native and former Bison, led the Cascades in scoring at the half, with 9 points. Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC was second with 8 points Luyken and Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC each pulled down three boards at the intermission.

Mubo Ilelaboye, Winnipeg, Manitoba led the Bisons with seven points at the half.

In the second half, UFV continued to play great defense as they held Manitoba to 20 points the entire half as they outscored their opponents by 24 points to earn a 42 point victory. Klassen and Sarah Wierks would lead the Cascades with 11 points each, first year forward Kayli Sartori, Chilliwack, BC added 10 points in her CIS home court debut. Sarah Wierks led UFV with six total rebounds as the Cascades out rebounded Manitoba 31-29.

Ilelaboye led Manitoba with a game high 16 point performance. Vanessa De Vries, Strathroy, Ontario pulled down 5 boards for the bisons.

UFV 20 11 23 21 = 75
