UFV Cascades defeat Concordia U Stingers, 95-86, at UBC Invitational Tournament
Cascades sweep their opponents at event going perfect 3-0
The University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team defeated the Concordia University Stingers (RSEQ), 95-86, to sweep their three games at the UBC Thunderbirds Invitational tournament. The Cascades won their three games by a total of 39 points. They now turn their attentions to the team’s inaugural Honda Way men’s basketball tournament, next weekend, at the Envision Athletic Centre.
Today’s game was a struggle in the early going with lead changing hands for the first several minutes before the Cascades went on a 12-0 run to establish a quick 10 point lead. The Cascades would enjoy that double figure margin for most of the game. Concordia narrowed the gap several times but it was only with two minutes remaining that they pulled within two points, at 86-84. UFV shut the door the rest of the way outscoring their Quebec rivals by a 9-2 score to sweep the UBC tournament.
“Another very good result for our team. Hopefully we can draw some confidence from these games and take that forward into the Canada West regular season,” said Head Coach Barnaby Cradock. “Thought we played hard and exerted solid effort on the defensive end, and we will need to continue to do so to have success in league play. Concordia is a talented team, and there full court pressure gave us some real problems. Over all we learned lots about ourselves this weekend, and will hopefully take some lessons from here and continue to improve over the upcoming weeks.”
The Cascades were led by Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC with a team high 25 points. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 22 points as five different Cascades were in double figures. Sheldon Bjorgaard, Abbotsford, BC led the Cascades with 8 total rebounds and 5 assists.
