Northwest University Eagles defeat UFV Cascades, 86-81, to capture Honda Way Men’s Basketball Tournament

Northwest University Eagles (NAIA) defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (Canada West-CIS), 86-81, to capture the First annual Honda Way tournament. The Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack defeated the University of Guelph Gryphons, 92-85, in the earlier game.

The Cascades came out strong and quickly built a lead which they held onto through the first quarter, leading by 8 points after one. In the second quarter, the Cascades maintained their lead and went into the locker room up by six points. The third quarter was the Cascades undoing as they were outscored by 19 points and surrender the lead to Northwest, by 13 points. In the final quarter UFV came back within five points as they kept Northwest from hitting any more three point shots down the stretch.

“It was a great tournament, and we’re fortunate to have 3 well coached and class programs attend. Unfortunatly we could not pull off a win this evening, but credit has to go to a deservind Northwest squad. They played a great second half, and earned the victory. Were 4 and 0 in our CIS counter games against canadian opposition, so we will move forward now to a week of practice and the start of league play,” said UFV Head Coach Barnnaby Craddock.

The Eagles were led by Jordan Call, Kirkland, Washington with a team high 20 points. Tyler Mendezona, Issaquah, Washington added 19 points and Ahmaad Cook, Los Angeles, California scored 15 points in the tournament win. Michael Greene, Belligham, Washington led Northwest with 9 total rebounds.
