Honda Way/UFV Cascades Men’s Basketball Tournament:
Game Two: UFV Cascades defeat University of Guelph Gryphons. 94-76
The host University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (Canada West) defeated the University of Guelph Gryphons (OUA West), 94-76, in game two of the 2011 Honda Way/UFV Cascades men’s basketball tournament. The Cascades will play Northwest University Eagles in the Championship Game tomorrow night at 7PM, while Guelph will take on Thompson Rivers Wolfpack, at 5PM.
The Cascades came out strong and opened a quick lead on their Ontario opponents, leading at the end of the first quarter by 5 points. In the second quarter, UFV held onto their lead but Guelph close the gap to one point several times before the Cascades went into the locker room up by 4 points.
The third quarter belonged to UFV as they held Guelph to 12 points while outscoring them by 17 to take a commanding 21 point lead into the fourth quarter. UFV continued to keep the Gryphons from narrowing the lead and won the game by 18 points.
“Thought we were efficient at offensive end tonight! Guelph out worked us for portions of the game. We will try to put 40 minute effort on floor tomorrow evening versus a solid Northwest team,” said Head Coach Barnaby Craddock.
The Cascades were led by Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC with a team high 17 point performance. Four other Cascades were in double figures as Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC and James York, Richland, Washington each scored 14 points and Sheldon Bjorgaard, Abbotsford, BC and Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC each added 13 points apiece in the victory over Guelph. Mike James, Winnipeg, Manitoba was one of three Cascades with 5 rebounds. James also scored 4 points, and was selected as UFV’s Player of the Game.
The Gryphons were led by Adam Bering, Windsor, Ontario with 17 points and 6 total rebounds. Jack Beatty, Woodstock, Ontario scored 14 points and Daniel McCarthy, Guelph, Ontario added 13 points, 3 assists and one rebound as he was named Guelph’s Player of the Game.
