The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team fell to UBC, 3-0, on Friday and TWU, 1-0, on Saturday dropping their Canada est regular season record to 3-5-2 for 11 points. The Cascades currently sit in 7th place, three points out of the fourth and final playoff spot, with four regular season matches remaining.
On Friday, UBC jumped out to a quick lead 13 minutes into the match and led by two goals at the half. UFV battled hard all night but could not solve the Thurderbird defense and fell 3-0, in Vancouver. The corner kicks were an indication of the positive effort UFV put in as they registered six. Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC made 7 saves in the loss.
“We were second best in battles too frequently today, uncharacteristically playing most of this game on our back foot. Full credit to UBC, they were dangerous and punished our errors. We need to learn from this and prepare ourselves for another tough challenge,” said Rob Giesbrecht.
On Saturday night, UFV fell to their arch rivals, Trinity Western University, 1-0, in Langley, in the first meeting since the 2010 Canada West semi-final match won by UFV, in Edmonton. Another hard fought match between the two schools with the lone goal being scored midway through the first half by TWU. Biagioni made 4 saves against the Spartans and the weekend marks the first in Head Coach Rob Giesbrecht’s two years, as head coach, that UFV’s offense did not score a goal.
“Very proud of the effort we put in today; unfortunately we didn’t get the result we intended to get. Today was a step forward and a much improved effort from some of our recent performances. We limited our opponent’s scoring opportunities and were dangerous at times on set-pieces. I felt we were unlucky to have that goal called back. Both of our first-year central defenders bounced back and had strong performances. Carly Neeson was excellent up top,” said Rob Giesbrecht.
The Cascades have two home matches this coming weekend against Regina and Manitoba.
