UFV Cascades in First Place after prefect opening weekend

UFV Cascades women’s soccer team opened the 2011 Canada West regular season with a pair of 2-1 road victories over the University of Manitoba Bisons and University of Regina Cougars. The Cascades are tied for first with a perfect 2-0-0 record.

On Saturday, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, UFV after a scoreless first half, a pair of first year players Paige Friesen, Abbotsford, BC and Dariann Kloot, Chilliwack, BC opened the scoring for UFV knocking home their first CIS career goals. Chantele Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC earned the victory in the Cascades’ net making four saves.

“A great result after a hard working performance. I was proud of how we responded to a tough first half and also very proud of how we pursued the deciding goal right to the end of the game. The conditions were tough today but we were able to persevere and leave with the important three points. I thought Manitoba was excellent and they made us work hard for the entire 90 minutes,” said Head Coach Rob Giesbrecht.

Sunday, saw the Cascades improve to a perfect 2-0-0 on the young Canada West season with goals by Danika Snook, Chilliwack, BC and Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC. Biagioni improved to a perfect 2-0-0 with five saves.

“Very proud of our weekend, travelling to Manitoba and Regina and getting six points is a huge accomplishment. I thought Regina was very good today, they made us work and did a great job keeping possession. We made some necessary adjustments at the half and did a better job keeping our shape. We created numerous scoring opportunities through our set pieces. Carly’s goal was special, it’s nice having a player like her on the team because at any given moment she can provide a moment of brilliance that can change the game. Chantelle made a crucial save in the latter stages to preserve the win. Our back four continue to progress and limited our opponents from turning their possession into goal scoring opportunities. It’s been a great weekend and a great start to our season,” said Giesbrecht.
