Women’s Soccer: Cascades defeat U Ottawa Gee Gees, 2-0, in Ottawa

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team defeated the University of Ottawa Gee Gees, 2-0, in a preseason exhibition scrimmage, at Matt Anthony Field, in Ottawa, Ontario.  The Cascades start their four game road trip with a victory over the defending OUA Bronze medialists.

Cascades held off an early charge by Ottawa and veteran goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC kept the match scoreless with several key saves including an excellent tackle at the 20 yard line on a Gee Gee breakaway.  The Cascades came alive after Biagioni’s tackle and mounted an attack that led to a shot that beat Ottawa’s goalkeeper, but the linespersons called UFV for off sides and the match remained scoreless.  UFV continued to pressure Ottawa and at the 41st minute off a corner kick second year striker Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC scored the match’s first goal, assisted by Cascade captain Megan Webster, Abbotsford, BC.
A minute later UFV came racing down the pitch and Danika Snook, second year forward from Chilliwack, BC set up Ellen Kuyer, Surrey, BC who scored the Cascades second goal on a beautiful shot that Ottawa’s keeper had no chance on!
The second half was even with both teams having scoring chances.  UFV Continued to keep Ottawa away from their net, Biagioni made a couple more key saves to hold on for the shutout.
“It was a tough game today, University of Ottawa are an excellent side. We came out a bit tentative but we improved throughout the first half and were rewarded with two late goals in the half. Megan Webster continued to provide excellent service from our corners and forced the first goal via an own goal. Ellen Kuyer has been in sensational form to start her fifth year and she scored a beautiful goal after combining nicely with Danika Snook. Carly Neeson was also dangerous throughout the game and I thought Chelsea Steffen was a commanding physical presence in the middle of the park. We played very well at times today and at other times we showed we still have a lot of work to do before the regular season. This trip is an excellent preparation tool for our season and we need to make the most of it. Today was a positive experience for us in many ways. Thanks to University of Ottawa for doing an outstanding job hosting us, first class,” said Rob Giesbrecht, Head Coach, Cascades women’s soccer team.
