Cascades tie Carleton, 1-1, in Nation’s Capital, on Sunday.
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team tied the Carletion University Ravens, 1-1, at Keith Harris Stadium, in Ottawa, Ontario. The Cascades record on the four ganme road trip to Ottawa and Montreal now stands at 1-0-1 as the team heads to Montreal for the final two games on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Ravens came out strong and UFV held off their early attempts to open the scoring. The Cascades defense led by veteran goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC kept Carleton from any real great scoring chances and then midway through the half, UFV came alive and on a counter attack, second year forward Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC set up Samantha Slack, Surrey, BC with a great lead pass, Slack then went around the Carleton goalkeeper, Anna Morsky, and scored into an empty net to give UFV the one goal lead. The Cascades slim lead held up until the 90th minute of play as Carleton’s Valerie Hamilton beat the Cascades rookie goalkeeper Danica Ferris, Chilliwack, BC to tie the match. Ferris playing in her first CIS game played the last 20 minutes. Biagioni has now played 160 minutes on the trip without giving up a goal.
“Another tough test on our Eastern preseason trip, Carleton was well organized and they did a great job of limiting our time and space. We started a bit slow and struggled to attack with any sort of assertiveness through most of the first half. Sammie Slack showed great composure in finishing our goal after being played in by Carly Neeson. In the earlier stages of the second half we picked it up and created numerous goal scoring opportunities. We were able to get everyone into the game and were unlucky to give up the late tying goal. I was quite pleased with how we responded after half-time with the quantiity and quality of goal scoring opportunities, we do need to finish more clinically and improve on our final pass in the attacking third. Today was a great prepratory experience for us, the early game after a tough game yesterday mimicks what we will face in Canada West league play,” said Head Coach Rob Giesbrecht.
