UFV Cascade men’s golf team defend title at Bandon Dunes Golf Tournament

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s golf team won the 2011 Bandon Dunes tournament defending their 2010 title.

Looking to build on their victory at last month’s Bear Mountain Invitational, in Victoria, the UFV men’s golf team brought their talents south of the border to compete this past weekend at the Bandon Dunes Invitational, hosted by the South West Oregon Community College Lakers of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAAC).  With their sights set on defending their 2010 title in the same event, the Cascades got off to a good start on the opening day paced by Brett Stewart,  Abbotsford, BC, and Drew St. Cyr, Langley, BC posting impressive 1-over par 73s on the famously challenging links layout of Bandon Dunes along the Oregon Coast.

Finding themselves 3-shots down going into the final day, the team summoned yet another come-from-behind victory in what is becoming a trademark for the Cascades golf program.  Led by team captain and 2010 BCCAA player of the year Mitch Lock, Mission, BC the Cascades managed to overcome the deficit and eventually pulled out a narrow one-shot victory over the field which included 11 American teams from across the Pacific Northwest.   “Playing at Bandon Dunes is such a special experience, and getting back-to-back wins on a course with this kind of mystique is pretty awesome to say the least,” added Lock, who finished third in the individual category.

The Cascades will now look to carry their recent momentum into the RCGA University Championships May 30th-June 3rd at Royal Ashburn Golf Club just outside Toronto.
