Women’s Basketball to Face U of Toronto in Fredericton, NB

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades will travel to Fredericton, NB to participating in the inaugural CIS East Regional Women’s Basketball Championship tournament.  The Cascades who finished fourth at the 2011 Canada West Championship tournament will face the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, (OUA East Division) in the first round of the two day tournament, hosted by the University of New Brunswick, in Fredericton, NB.  The UNB Varsity Reds (AUS) will face the University of Western Ontario Mustangs (OUA West Division) in the other semi-final at Fredericton.  The winner of Saturday’s Championship Game receives an automatic bid to the 2011 CIS “Final 8” national championship tournament, March 18-20 in Windsor, Ontario.

 

The games will be played at the Aitken University Centre, on the campus of UNB.

Canada West Results

 

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades finished fourth, at the 2011 Canada West Championship “Final Four.” On Friday night they fell to the eventual CW Champions the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, 88-59, and in the Bronze medal game, the University of Alberta Pandas defeat UFV, 77-64, to seat the UFV Cascades as the fourth team coming out of Canada West.  The Cascades go into the inaugural CIS East Regional Championship tournament with a 14-14 overall regular and post season record.  The Cascades will face the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (OUA East) in the East Regional semi-final.

 

Friday night, the Cascades fell behind early as the home team Huskies established a quick double digit lead and never looked back as they held UFV to 12 points in the first quarter and 10 in the final quarter.  The Cascades participating in their first ever Canada West “Final Four” played well in the second quarter scoring 20 points.

 

Alyssa Gaukel, Chilliwack, BC led all Cascades with a 17 point performance.  Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba added 12 points in the loss to the Huskies.   Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack led the Cascades with 10 total rebounds.

On Saturday night, the first half was very close, tied at 20 points each, after the first quarter, the Pandas held a mere two point lead at the intermission. The third quarter belonged to the Pandas outscoring UFV by 12 points and holding the Cascades to 10 points.  The Pandas would hold on to earn the 2011 Canada West Bronze Medal.

 

Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba led UFV with 12 points, while Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC added 16 points.  Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC pulled down six rebounds to lead all Cascades.

“We had a rough weekend, we need to regroup as a team to face Toronto in the Maritimes this coming weekend,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.  The Cascades women’s basketball program will be making its first CIS National appearance, next Friday, when they face the University of Toronto.  UFV is participating in its fifth season with In the CIS and has seen two programs (Women’s Soccer and Basketball) qualify to participate in post conference play this school year.
