University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeat UFV Cascades, 88-73.

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 88-73, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  The Cascades Canada West regular season men’s basketball record falls to 6-13 and UFV currently sits tied for 8th Place, based on the outcome of tonight’s Calgary-Manitoba game.

The game was very competitive for three quarters with Winnipeg jumping out to an early lead after the first quarter with a five point advantage.  The second quarter and third were even as Winnipeg’s five point lead remained the Cascades deficit going into the fourth quarter, where the home team outscored UFV by ten points to clinch their third win of the regular season.
“We were outplayed from start to finish by a cohesive Winnipeg squad.  The 16 offensive rebounds we gave up is one large indicator of areas we need to improve on defensively.   Winnipeg also did a good job of getting penetration, and we have our work cut out for us to play better on ball defense and keep our checks in front of us,” said UFV Head Coach Barnaby Craddock.
The Cascades were led by  Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC with a team high 23 points.  Zeon Gray, Los Angeles,CA added 17 points in the loss to Winnipeg.  James Elliott, Perth, Western Australia and Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC each pulled down 6 rebounds to lead UFV.  The Cascades recorded 29 total boards for the game.
