The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team swept the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, 77-54 on Friday and, 70-50, on Saturday to clinch a 2011 Canada West post season basketball playoff spot. The Cascades CW regular season record improves to 10-12, with two games remaining, next weekend, against Brandon University, at Envision Athletic Centre. The Cascades are tied with the University of Calgary Dinos for 7th Place.
The Cascades are the second youngest team in Canada West and their hard work and dedication over the summer built a team that improved by a minimum of 8 wins with two games remaining.
On Friday, UFV defeat Lethbridge 77-54. Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC led the Cascades with 22 points. Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC added 15 points and Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba 12 points. Three different Cascades pulled down 7 rebounds each as UFV recorded 37 for the game.
On Saturday, UFV defeated Lethbridge 70-50, to “officially” clinch the Canada West post season berth. The Cascades return to the CW playoffs for a third time in five years. UFV was led by Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC with a team high 16 points. Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba added 14 points and Courtney Baertel, Chilliwack, BC chipped in with 13 points. Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led the Cascades with 7 total rebounds, as UFV pulled down 38 total boards for the game.
“I am very proud of our team, they perservered all season and tonight they know they have accomplish the goal of going to the Canada West post season playoffs,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.
Klassen will be going to her fourth CW post season tournament, the first three appearences with Winnipeg. Alyssa Gaukel, Chilliwack, BC will making her third CW appearence all with UFV.
