The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, 77-63, in game one , of the Canada West quarterfinal best two out of three playoff series. The game was played in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The Cascades came out strong and never trailed in the game as they quickly established a five point first quarter lead, 20-15 and went on to maintain the lead at the half by holding off a Winnipeg rally in the second quarter to narrow the Cascade lead to three points at the intermission. In the second half UFV continued to play strong defence holding Winnipeg to 25 second half points as they were able to win game one by 14 points.
“I am very pleased with our play tonight. For a young team with little playoff experience we showed we can compete in Canada West post season games,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.
Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC led the Cascades with18 points each. Alyssa Gaukel, Chilliwack, BC added 13 points and Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba rounded out the Cascades in double figures with 10 points. Sarah Wierks pulled down 18 rebounds to lead all Cascades as UFV recorded 43 boards for the game.
