Men’s Basketball Sheldon Bjorgaard and Women’s Basketball’s Courtney Bartel are the UFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat Athletes of the Week

Week ending Sunday, February 13, 2011.

 

Bjorgaard, a third year Biology major from Abbotsford, BC helped the UFV Cascades men’s basketball team defeat the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, on Saturday, 90-85.  The veteran guard played 27 minutes, scoring 10 points, with 7 total rebounds and 4 assists over the weekend to help keep UFV in the hunt for a Canada West post season playoff berth.  The Cascades are 8-14, with two games remaining and could finish as high as 7th place in the standings.

Bartel, a second year guard, from Chilliwack, BC, led the UFV Cascades women’s basketball team back into the Canada West women’s basketball post season tournament with a 35 point weekend in UFV’s sweep of the Lethbridge Pronghorns.  The Cascades defeated Lethbridge, 77-54 on Friday and 70-50,on Saturday.  The Cascades are now 10-12, with two games remaining, a minimum of 8 win improvement from last year!  Bartel played an average of 24 minutes in “quarterbacking” the offense on both nights.  In addition to the 35 points, Courtney recorded 10 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists over the weekend.
