University of Alberta Pandas defeat UFV Cascades, 70-52, at Envision Athletic Centre

The University of Alberta Pandas earned a split of the two game Canada West regular season series with a 70-52 victory over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades.  The loss drops the Cascades regular season record to 8-8 good for 7th Place in the Canada West standings.

The first quarter started the way last night’s game ending very competitive and with the home team on top, 15-14.  In the second quarter, the Pandas showed the Envision Athletic Center faithful why they are one of the top Canada West teams as they held the Cascades to 7 points while outscoring UFV by 14 to take a 35-22 lead in the break.
The Pandas continued their strong play in the third quarter and opened up a 20 point lead by again holding UFV’s offense to 11 points.  The Cascades showed life in the last quarter but the damage had been done in the two middle quarters and Alberta goes back to Edmonton with their 13th league victory and an 18 point victory.
The Cascades were led by Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba with 18 points.  Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC was the only other Cascade in double figures with 11 points.  Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC and Nicole Wierks, Chillwack, BC each pulled down 5 rebounds as UFV recorded 20 total rebounds for the game.
“Alberta showed why they came into the weekend as Canada West number 1 team. They played physical, controlled the pace of the game, and really forced us to rush shots on offence. These are the lessons we need to learn if we are going to break through against the best in Canada West,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.
