The University of Alberta Golden Bears earned a split of the two game Canada West regular season series with a 84-70 victory over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. The loss drops the Cascades regular season record to 6-10 good for 8th Place in the Canada West standings.
The Golden Bears came out strong tonight and while the first quarter was very entertaining with the lead changing three times early, Alberta grabbed the lead midway through the quarter and led by two points after the first and by four points at the intermission.
In the second half, the game remained close but UFV could not hit the one “key” shot during the quarter to even the score and trailed by 8 points after three quarters. The final quarter saw the Golden Bears put a little distance between themselves and the Cascades as they earned their 10th victory of the Canada West season.
The Cascades were led by James Elliott, Perth, Western Australia with a team high 20 point performance. Zeon Gray, Los Angeles, California added 16 points and Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC chipped in with 12 points. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC led all Cascades with 5 total rebounds as UFV pulled down 27 boards for the game.
