UFV Cascades defeat University of Calgary Dinos, 76-60, in Cow Town!

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team have now won five straight Canada West regular season contests with tonight’s 76-60 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos, in Cow Town. The Cascades move over the five hundred mark as their record improves to 7-6, good for 7th Place in Canada West standings.  The top 8 teams earn post season berths.  The Cascades will play Calgary again tomorrow night, game time is set for 6PM MST.

The Cascades came out strong and quickly built a double digit lead by the end of the first quarter, leading the Dinos, 22-12.  In the second quarter UFV continued to put the pressure on Calgary and the Cascade defense was able to stop any lengthy runs by Calgary and go into the intermission up by 12 points, 44-32.
In the second half, UFV continued to hold Calgary in check.  The Cascade defense held the Dinos to 9 third quarter points and built up 16-point lead after the third stanza..  In the fourth quarter, the teams traded baskets and UFV would hold on for its 7th league victory of the year, by 16 point margin.
Four different Cascades were in double figures led by Tessa Klassen, the veteran guard from Winnipeg, Manitoba led all scorers with a game high 17 point performance, 4 assists and 3 steals.  Alyssa Gaukel, the fifth year forward from Chilliwack, BC continued her consistent play with 13 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.  Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC added 12 points and Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC chipped in with 10 points and 3 assists.  Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led all Cascades with 7 total rebounds as UFV pulled down 32 boards for the game.
“Solid effort from the team tonight. I thought we played a very poised game which is something we have struggled with a bit. When Calgary made runs we were able to answer those,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.  “We have some things we need to work on with our shooting. We need to be better tomorrow if we are going to beat this Calgary team.”
