The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the University of Calgary Dinos, 86-69, in Calgary, Alberta to improve their Canada West regular season record to 5-9, with the win UFV moves back into 8th Place in the 13 team Canada West standings, by virtue of winning the head to head season series with Calgary by 14 points. The Dinos fall to 5-7 in the CW standings.
The Cascades came out strong tonight quickly opened up a lead and never looked back as they led by 5 points after the first quarter, 16-11, then hung on in the second quarter as Calgary made a run at their small lead, but UFV played well down the stretch and led by 2 points at the break.
In the second half, UFV opened up a double digit lead by out scoring Calgary by 14 points in the third quarter to go into the final stanza up by 16 points, 65-49. The Cascades continued to work hard and shut down their Calgary opponents as they held the Dinos to 20 fourth quarter points while scoring 21 points of their own, to clinch the victory and the head to head series.
Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC led all Cascades with a game high 28 point performance, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 17 points , 4 assists and 3 steals in the key victory over Calgary. James Elliott, Perth, Western Australia chipped in with 9 points and a team high 8 total rebounds. UFV pull down 45 total boards for the game.
“A very strong shift by our bench in the first quarter set the tone for our defensive effort tonight. I was happy with how they subbed in an had such a high level of focus, ” said UFV Head Coach Barnaby Craddock. “Joel Friesen also stood out, as he played an outstanding game. Joel did it on both sides of the ball, in fact I think his defense has been improving every game, as he is becoming a lock down defender.”
