The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team swept the two game exhibition series with Thompson Rivers University Wolf Pack, winning today, 63-56. The Cascades will now turn their attention to Canada West regular season play when they travel next week (January 7-8, 2011) to Calgary to face the Dinos.
In today’s game it was the Wolf Pack that got off to a quick start holding UFV to 6 first quarter points and leading by 6 points, 12-6, after the first stanza. In the second quarter UFV came alive using the three point shot to out score TRU by 17 points and take a lead into the locker room, by 11 points, 33-22.
The second half was even as both teams continued to use this final exhibition game to get ready for next week’s regular season play. The Cascades built up a 13 point lead after three quarters and never looked back as they won the game by 7 points.
Alyssa Gaukel, the fifth year veteran from Chilliwack, BC led all UFV scorers with 20 points. Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba added 18 points and Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC 13 points as seven different Cascades scored at least two points in the victory. Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC pulled down 11 boards as UFV registered 40 rebounds for the game.
“I am very happy with our teams play, we are playing with confidence as we go into the second half of the Canada West schedule,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.
