The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team defeated the UBC Thunderbirds, 2-0, to capture their first ever Canada West Championship.  The Cascades will head to Charlottetown, PEI as the Number One ranked team from Canada West, UBC also earned a berth at the CIS national tournament.   The Cascades go to PEI sporting a 10-5-1 overall regular and post season record.
The first half was very similar to the match, at Bateman Park, during the regular season, a hard fought battle in the middle of the pitch with very few great chances to score.  The Cascades defence played an excellent first half keeping the play away from goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni. Pitt Meadows, BC, when Biagioni was called upon she made the saves to keep the half scoreless.

The second half started with UFV going on the offense and their hard work paid off 11 minutes into the half when Megan Webster, Abbotsford, BC set up Ellen Kuyer, Surrey, BC with her second goal of the post season.  Ten minutes later the Cascade offense marched down the pitch and Chelsea Steffen, Abbotsford, BC scored the Cascades second goal.  Kuyer and Danielle deBruin, Victoria, BC assisted on the second goal.
UFV continued to pressure UBC’s defence keeping the ball away from Biagioni.  The defence has played a great controlled game keeping UBC on their heels for most of the afternoon.  Late in the match UBC pressured the UFV defence but the Cascades refuse to bend as they earned the shutout in the championship game.
The Cascades knocked off two of the Canada West’s women’s soccer power houses to capture the title.  The CIS will announce the tournament draw later tonight.
