UFV Cascades defeat TRU Wolfpack, 70-55, sweep two game series at Envision Athletic Centre

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack, 70-55, to sweep the two game Canada West regular season series, at Envision Athletic Centre.  The Cascades record improves to 4-6, with two regular season games remaining before the holiday break, against Trinity Western University, next weekend, at Langley Events Centre.

The Cascades and Wolfpack traded baskets to open the game and were tied at 14 each after the first quarter.  The Cascades started to pull ahead in the second quarter and never looked back as they went into the locker room up by 8-points at the half.  In the second half, UFV continued to play strong team basketball out scoring TRU by 7-points to win their 4th game of the year by 15-points.
The Cascades were led by Alyssa Gaukel, Chilliwack, BC with a team high 14-point performance.  Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC each added 11-points in the victory.  On a night in which the Junior Cascades program was front and center one of the graduates of the program, rookie Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC added 9-points and a team leading 9-total rebounds.
The Junior Cascade program has made a big contribution to the UFV Cascades women’s basketball team, there are currently seven Cascades that have graduated from the junior program,  Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC, Tess Hart, Mission, BC, Ashley Smith, Pitt Meadows, BC, Sam Kurath, Abbotsford, BC, Celeste Dyck, Abbotsford, BC, Sarah Wierks and Bartel.  The Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer has worked hard to produce a great program for the youth of the Fraser Valley and when the program graduates talent that compete in the CIS and content for a Canada West post season berth it is no wonder there are 400 youth players in the Junuior Cascade organization.
“Team effort tonight. Thought we really picked up our defensive intensity, prepared better for their physical play, shared the ball, and obviously we had a number of players making shots from the perimeter. Good team win. Need to keep this momentum going as we go into the last week of 2010,” said Tuchscherer on tonight’s win at the Envision Athletic Centre.
