The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack, 65-64, in a thriller at the Envision Athletic Centre. The victory improves UFV’s Canada West regular season record to 3-6 and ends the team’s 6-game losing streak. The Cascades spotted TRU a quick 8-2 lead before going on a 18-1 run and take a 6-point lead into the second quarter. UFV kept putting the pressure on TRU and with some great passing and rebounding extended the lead to 8-points at the break. For different Cascades were tied for the team lead in scoring, at the half, with 6-points.
In the second half, TRU came out strong and won the third quarter by 10-points to go into the final quarter with a 2-point advantage. In the fourth quarter the lead changed hands several times before UFV’s Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC would put her own offensive rebound in for the winning two points. The Wolfpack fall to 7-4 in Canada West.
“The team kept their composer as TRU took the lead in the third, fourth, and late. I thought that was a big step for us. We’ve been in a bunch of close ones and we haven’t managed those situations very well,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer. “Tonight the breaks went our way, the girls didn’t give up on the play (talking about the final seconds of the game). I was happy for the team.”
The Cascades were led by Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba with a team high 13-points, 4-assists and 7-rebounds Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC and Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC each chipped in with 9-points as 9-different Cascades scored 3 or more points in the victory. Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC pulled down a team leading 9-total rebounds as UFV recorded 38 boards for the game.
Jen Ju, Vancouver, BC led all TRU players with a game high 17-points. Kaitlyn Widsten, Tsawwassen, BC led the Wolfpack with 9-total rebounds.
