The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team capped off their “dream season” with a 3-0 victory over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, at Bateman Park, in Abbotsford, BC.  The victory coupled with a Saskatchewan loss and UBC victory propelled the Cascades into their first Canada West post season “Final Four” tournament, next weekend, in Edmonton, Alberta, hosted by the University of Alberta Pandas, the 2010 CW regular season champions.

The Cascades will play the program’s first ever post season match against their arch rivals Trinity Western University Spartans, who they beat, at UFV, 2-1, and tied in Langley, 2-2, to garner 4 of the possible 6 points this season.

“I am so proud of my team, we battled hard all year and were rewarded with a 3rd place finish, ” said UFV Head Coach Rob Giesbrecht.  “The girls worked so hard and they deserve all the praise.”
The Cascades came out strong today knowing they needed the three team points to clinch a post season berth and scored one minute into the match as Megan Webster, Abbotsford, BC scored her team leading 7th goal of the season.

The Cascades continued to control the match and 16 minutes later rookie sensation Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC scored her 5th of the season to give the Cascades a commanding lead.  UFV was relentless on this day continuing to control the game in all aspects, they had 10 corner kicks in the first half and Lethbridge’s goalkeeper Jaleesa Johnston, Calgary, Alberta made several excellent saves to keep the Pronghorns within two goals at the half.

The second half was the same as the first, UFV continued to control the match and as word came down that a win would clinch the program’s first ever CW post season berth it was fitting that the Cascades’ Captain Webster would score the clinching and final regular season goal at the 70th minute on a Penalty Kick.

The Cascades continued their dominance of Lethbridge winding up with 19 corner kicks, 16 shots on goal and veteran goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC earned her 5th shutout of the season and lowered her goals against average to 1.21 for the 14-match regular season.

“Today was tough, we carried the play and had countless opportunities to score; however we couldn’t put them away until late,” said Giesbrecht.  “Carly Neeson was a threat all game. Lyndsay Munro was solid in the back as usual.  Megan Webster fought and again came away with two goals.”
