UFV Cascades Women’s Soccer team shutout UBC Thunderbirds, 2-0, at Bateman Park.

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team defeated the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, 2-0, to improve their CWUAA regular season record to 2-3-0 for 6-points.  The match was played at Bateman Park, in Abbotsford, BC.

The Cascades came out on fire and controlled the early part of the match winning all the “loose balls” and staying to the game plan laid out by UFV Head Coach Rob Giesbrecht, who earned his first career CIS home victory at the helm of the Cascades.  “I am very proud of the team, they stayed with our game plan and were brilliant especially in the first half,”  said Giesbrecht.
The Cascades worked hard all afternoon at keeping UBC, the CIS Number 7 ranked team, from any dangerous scoring opportunities and kept pressure on the UBC defense the entire first half.  The Cascades were rewarded for their play 19 minutes into the match as veteran forward Ellen Kuyer, Surrey, BC slipped the ball under UBC’s goalkeeper, Meghan Best, North Vancouver, BC on an excellent set up by the Cascades Samantha Slack, Surrey, BC.  The Cascades, worked on getting the “bugs” out of their offense all week, doubled their lead five minutes later on a Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC goal.  The rookie from Maple Ridge, BC won the ball away from Thunderbird defenders and then beat Best to send the home team into the intermission with a two-goal lead.  It was Neeson’s first career CIS goal.
In the second half, the Thunderbirds started to control more of the match and win the small battles in the middle of the pitch, but the relentless effort on this day by UFV’s total team play led by veterans Megan Webster, fourth year Abbotsford native, Lyndsay Munro, fifth year Maple Ridge defender and goalkeeper Chantal Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC who earned her second shutout of the CWUAA regular season, kept UBC off the score sheet and offensively frustrated the entire afternoon.
“I am so proud of my teammates, we worked hard all afternoon, what a great result for our program, said Webster, the Cascades Captain.
UFV goes right back to work Sunday, as they play their arch rivals from down Highway 1, the Trinity Western University Spartans, at Bateman Park, 12:00PM game time.
