The University of the Fraser Valley men’s and women’s volleyball programs held their first annual alumni games in front of close to 200 hundred people, the varsity programs swept the alumni at the Envision Athletic Centre. The Men defeated their “elders” 3 sets 1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-13, 26-24) while the women’s team polished off the alumni 3 sets 0, (25-21, 25-22, 25-18).
The night was also a project of both varsity programs who help out at the Abbotsford Food Bank as they raised awareness for the Food Bank and almost everyone attending tonight’s alumni doubleheader donated canned and dry goods for the bank. “It was nice to participate in the first Alumni game, see old teammates and play against my Assistant Coach Carolyn (Jennings), ” said Cascade captain Brittany Stewart, a third year veteran from Langley, BC. “I also am very proud of our fans, families and supporters that did not forget about the Abbotsford Food Bank, everyone was very generous tonight.”
Derek Fletcher, a member of the losing men’s alumni team agrees, ” Tonight was great! What an honor to be able to participate in the first alumni game.” “I hope this is the beginning of building together a strong alumni association for both teams! It was nice to see both our current varsity teams are very talented.” Derek graduated from UFV with a degree in Kinesiology, in 2009, and currently is studying for his Masters Degree at UBC, in Physiotherapy.
