The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades Men’s Golf Coach Chris Bertram has been named 2010 BCCAA Coach of the Year and Mitch Lock, a fourth year General Studies major from Mission, BC has been named the 2010 Male Golfer of the Year.
Bertram has led the UFV Cascades men’s golf program to two straight BCCAA Provincial titles (2008 & 2009). In the current BCCAA regular season, he has the Cascades just three strokes off a third consecutive title with one event remaining. Since Bertram took over the team 6 seasons ago, the team has amassed an impressive 10 tournament championships, 8 silver medals, and remarkably has only finished outside of the podium on 3 occasions. Under Bertram’s guidance, the team has been called to the Abbotsford Sports Wall of Fame for an incredible three years running. More recently, Bertram was asked to coach Team BC, Canada’s sole representative at the Taiwan National Championship in August of 2010.
“Its an honour to be recognized by my fellow coaches” remarked Bertram. “But the credit really goes to the core group of players who have stuck it out through the tough times, and the UFV administration for believing in and supporting the program from day 1″.”Chris has done a great job in leading our UFV Cascades Golf Program'” said Rick Nickelchok, UFV Athletic Director. “I am very proud of Chris and it is great to see his colleagues recognize his hard work and talents.”
The Cascade Golf Program was further honoured as 4th year UFV golfer Mitch Lock has been named the BCCAA player of the year. Lock has had a great fall season, starting in August when he and teammate Brett Stewart were asked to represent Canada at the Taiwan Amateur Golf Championships, eventually finishing inside the Top 30. Lock carried that momentum into the BCCAA fall season where he has charged out to an impressive 8-stroke lead in the individual overall category and has yet to finish outside the top 5 in any single event.
“Mitch has worked really hard this year and it’s great to see his efforts paying off and being recognized. I am really proud of the progress he has made in his 4 years at UFV both as a player and as a team leader. He is a first-class individual and there couldn’t be a more deserving recipient of this award,” said Bertram.
Bertram, along with Lock and the rest of the UFV Cascades team Brett Stewart (Abbotsford), Brett Webster (Abbotsford), Mike Broadfoot (Abbotsford), Aaron Pauls (Chilliwack), Ian Mulder (Abbotsford) and Drew St. Cyr (Langley) now head off to the CCAA National Championships hosted by Thompson Rivers University at The Dunes in Kamloops, BC, October 12-15th.
