The University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team were defeated by the University of Manitoba Bisons, 72-71, at the Envision Athletic Centre. The Cascades will host the Bisons on Saturday, at 7:00PM, in game two of the Canada West regular season schedule.
The Cascades opened the game on fire and quickly established a double digit lead and led by 16-points at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Manitoba started to get their legs and slowly the large lead dwindled down to a 7-point Cascade lead at the half.
In the second half, the Bisons started to take control of the game and outscored UFV by 9-points to take a 2-point lead into the final quarter. The fourth quarter was very entertaining for the fans with the lead changing hands numerous times before the Bisons Richard Reimer, LaSalle, Manitoba hit a two point basket with 10 seconds left to give Manitoba the lead for good.
The Cascades had one last opportunity to score the winning basket but Manitoba’s defense held handing UFV their first league loss of the regular season.
Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC led the Cascades with a 22-point performance. Zeon Gray, Los Angeles, CA chipped in with 15-points and Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 10-points in the loss to Manitoba. James Elliott, Perth, Western Australia pulled down a team leading 11-rebounds as UFV out rebounded Manitoba 48 to 45 for the game.
The Bisons were led by Reimer with 22-points and 14-total rebounds.
