Huskies beat Cascades 3-1, fall to 6th Place in Canada West standings.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies beat the UFV Cascades, 3-1, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, dropping the Cascades to 4-5-1 for 13-points and to 6th place in the Canada West standings.  The Cascades now trail Saskatchewan by 2-points and Calgary by 1-point for the 4th and final post season berth. The Cascades will play their four remaining home game in the “friendly confines” of Bateman Park. Considering the unbalanced Canada West schedule the Cascades do not play the Huskies again, so they need to have more team points than Saskatchewan to over take the Huskies for a playoff berth.

The Cascades came out sluggish and Saskatchewan took quick advantage scoring the game’s first goal five minutes in and kept the pressure on UFV’s defense and there hard work produced the second goal ten minutes to the break.  The Cascades were two goals down on the road at the half.  In the second half they came alive and Ellen Kuyer, Surrey, BC scored five minutes into the second frame on a feed from Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC to bring the Cascades back into the match.
UFV kept pressure on Saskatchewan but could not turn there “loose ball” wins or 6 corner kicks into any goals to tie the match.  Saskatchewan would clinch the victory with a third goal in the 78th minute of play.  Moving them into sole possession of 4th place in Canada West.
“Its disappointing to come out flat in such a big game,” said UFV Head Coach Rob Giesbrecht.  “In the second half we (UFV) picked it up however we could not turn the hard work into goals.”
Chelsea Steffen, a second year midfielder , from Abbotsford, BC and Samantha Slack, a second year midfielder from Surrey, BC battled hard today they controlled the midfield for UFV and gave the strikers opportunities to tie match in the second half.
