Cascades defeat rival TWU Spartans, 2-1, at Bateman Park, in Abbotsford, BC

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Trinity Western University Spartans, 2-1, in one of the most exciting soccer matches all season at Bateman Park.  The victory lifts the men’s soccer record in Canada West 3-8-0 for 9-points, good for 6th place in the conference.  The Cascades entertain UBC, on Sunday, at Bateman Park, kick-off at 2:15PM.

The Cascades played an excellent game on Saturday staying with the more experience TWU Spartans from the first whistle to last.  It seemed on this day UFV was able to close down any play the Spartans were trying to develop and had an answer for any set play TWU threw at the UFV defense.  The match started with UFV pressuring the Spartans defense and paid off three minutes in as Sasa Plavsic, Coquitlam, BC scored his first of two goals on the day.  The lead gave life to the UFV team as they continued to play hard win loose balls and keep the speedy TWU offense from breaking out of its side of the field.  The one blemish in the half was a penalty kick awarded to TWU, for a hand ball in the box, Andre Costa, Ipatinga, Brazil made no mistake burring the ball past Colton Keam to tie the game at one.
When TWU did have its opportunities, UFV’s defense led by veteran captain James Giebelhaus, Abbotsford, BC, and Ravi Singh, Abbotsford, BC and goalkeeper Colton Keam, Langley, BC shut the door and preserved the halftime tie.
In the second half UFV continue to frustrate the Spartans.  TWU started to carry more of the play in the second half, but UFV was not to be denied on this day.  Midway through the half Plavsic broke through the middle and his rocket shot bent off TWU’s goalkeeper Andrew Fink, Burnaby, BC into the Spartans’ net for the winning goal.  TWU would test Keam several more times before the final whistle but UFV held on for the win and season series split of a win each in 2010.
“A great boost for moral and an even better performance as a team. Trinity are a very good team and we showed that we can compete with the best teams in Canada West, ” said UFV Head Coach Alan Errington.
