The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades were beaten tonight by the Trinity Western University Spartans, 3-0, in Langley, BC. The Cascades CWUAA regular season record falls to 1-3-0 for 3-points and the Cascades have dropped three straight league games.
Tonight’s game started out very exciting with the young less experienced Cascades staying even with the more experienced Spartans. The majority of the first half was played in the middle of the park with both teams controlling play at different times. UFV had several opportunities to break through and score the first goal of the match, Craig Robinson, Chilliwack, BC and Stuart Rowlands, Chilliwack, BC both had great scoring chances on TWU’s goalkeeper Andrew Fink, Burnaby, BC. On defense Colton Keam, Langley, BC was solid for the Cascades in nets as he kept the Spartans off the score sheet. The Cascades did a great job in the first half of containing the very fast outside wingers for TWU, every time they attempted to make a run down the wings, UFV’s defense was able to contain them and prevent breakaways.
In the second half the more experienced Spartans came out strong and put pressure on UFV’s defense. The pressure paid off as TWU opened the scoring at the 54 minute mark by Cardin Davis, Salt Spring Island, BC. The Cascades were able to composed themselves after the nine minute run by TWU and mount an attack on TWU’s defense but were unable to finish on several great shots, the best attempt was by Josh Atebe, Mission, BC whose header off a cross from Juan Pablo More Perea, Mission, BC hit the cross bar midway through the half.
The Spartans were able to put the game away with two late goals by Garrett Peters, Regina, Saskatchewan at the 85th minute and Danfi Parker, Woodbridge, Virginia at the 90th minute. Fink earned the shutout victory in the Spartan net.
