The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (CWUAA-CIS) defeated the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack (BCCAA-CCAA), 1-0, to close out the 2010 non-conference exhibition season with a perfect 4-0-0 record. The Cascades open the CWUAA regular season, next week, on the road in Alberta against the University of Lethbridge and University of Calgary.
The Cascades came out strong in the first half and controlled the majority of play moving the ball well and winning most of the loose balls in the middle of the park. UFV had numerous opportunities to open the scoring as several shots went wide and Thompson Rivers goalkeeper, Ethan Moy, Kamloops, BC made several saves on point blank shots by Cascade strikers. The lone goal of the match came at the 20th minute when the referee awarded UFV a penalty shot for a foul in the Wolfpack 18-yard box. The Cascades’ second year midfielder Mohammed Aziz, Abbotsford, BC made no mistake as he beat Moy to the upper left hand corner of the TRU goal to give the Cascades the one goal lead. While the rest of the first half was entertaining there were no real scoring chances by either team as UFV held onto their one goal lead at the half.
In the second half, UFV found itself collectively defending against Thompson Rivers offensive attack, but the Cascades defense which has been improving with each preseason match was strong and they earned their second straight shutout with Colton Keam, Langley, BC stopping all 3 shots he faced in the second half. “Our defense played well and is ready for the regular season test,” said UFV Head Coach Alan Errington. “They (Thompson Rivers) tested us in the second half but we were resilient.”
