The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades opened the 2010 CWUAA regular season “on the right foot” defeating the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, 2-0, in Lethbridge, Alberta. On the strength of two goals in the first half and solid defensive play, which the Cascades showed all preseason, the soccer program opens with a key road victory in their season opener. Including preseason, the Cascades have not lost to an CIS opponent this year, now 5-0-0 overall.
The Cascades opened the scoring off a set piece in the 13th minute, with Sasa Plavsic, the second year midfielder from Coquitlam, BC, bending a shot from 25 yards out past the out stretched arms of Horns keeper Colin Pattison. The Cascades continued to press for the second goal as first year Goalkeeper Colton Keam, Langley, BC kept the Pronghorns off the score sheet. The Cascades offense rewarded Keam and the defense as in the dying seconds of the opening half, Juan Pablo-Mora Perea, , a first year midfielder from Morelia, Mexico, half volleyed a ball just inside the 18 yard mark that eluded Pattison and sent the Cascades into the break with a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, UFV continued to pressure the Pronghorns while keeping the home team from scoring. “A good solid performance from the whole team, with 6 rookies starting their first CIS game, said UFV Head Coach Alan Errington. “We were unlucky not to be up by more at half time, as we missed on 2 breakaways.”
The Cascades will attempt to complete a perfect Alberta swing traveling to Calgary to face the Dinos Sunday afternoon.
