UFV Cascades defeat Carleton U Ravens, 3-2, in exhibition match, at Bateman Park.

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (CWUAA-CIS) defeated the Carleton University Ravens (OUA East-CIS) at Bateman Park, in an exhibition soccer match played in Abbotsford, BC.  The Cascades improve their 2010 exhibition record to 2-0-0.

The match started with Carleton all over the UFV defense setting up three corner kicks within the first two minutes of play.  The Cascades withstood the pressure and on their first counter attack of the match Jordan Marini, Port Coquitlam, BC slipped the ball past OUA All-Star goalkeeper Karl Wasslen, Ottawa, Ontario, to give the home side an early lead.  The Cascades kept the pressure on and it paid off two minutes later as Stuart Rowlands, Chilliwack, BC doubled UFV’s lead.  The Cascades defense continued to get stronger as the half went on, frustrating the Carleton offense and keeping shots from getting near Cascades goalkeeper Colton Keam, Langley, BC, starting his second straight preseason match for UFV.  The Cascades held onto their two goal lead at the half despite giving Carleton five first half corner kicks.
In the second, the Ravens came on strong and two minutes in Mitch Houlahan, Oakville, Ontario scored the Ravens first goal of the match.  The Cascades rebounded from the Carleton pressure to score their third goal of the match at the 58th minute when Sasa Plavsic, Coquitlam, BC set up Mohammed Aziz, Abbotsford, BC with what would turn out to be the winning goal.  The Ravens kept pressure on Keam and the Cascades defense scoring once more at the 61st minute of play, as Peter Manginas, Belleville, Ontario scored his first of the 2010 exhibition season.   The rest of the game was played in the middle of the park with very few last minute opportunities by either team.  They will play a second exhibition match on Saturday, August 28th, at 11:00AM (Bateman Park).
“”Tonight’s game was great football,” said Cascades Head Coach Alan Errington.  “If we can compete all season like we did tonight against one of the top OUA programs, we will have a good CW season.”  Carleton’s Head Coach Sandy Mackie agreed with Errington, “Tonight’s game was a good test for our side, it was our first match of the exhibition season.”  “UFV played well as a team, said the Ravens Head Coach.
