ABBOTSFORD, BC— Head Coach Dennis Bokenfohr has made more progress in signing new talent to his roster for the upcoming season. Experienced Kayla Bruce, and talented Katie Bakgaard have agreed to join the team this fall.
Kayla Bruce, a graduate from Fleetwood Park Secondary will be entering into the Faculty of Arts at UFV in September. A 5’11” Middle, Kayla received the MVP award all five years in her high school career. She comes with a wealth of experience as she is transferring from Briercrest College and a lot of games already under her belt at the college level. There, she proved herself as one of the most dominant players, earning her the Female Rookie of the Year accolade. Kayla was second in the North/South Division in blocks per set and among the top five in kills per set, earning her a place on the Women’s All-Conference second team.
“I chose UFV because I wanted to further my studies towards my vocational goal of becoming a teacher,” noted Kayla. “UFV offers what I am interested in academically as well as a great opportunity to continue playing volleyball at a high level.”
“After losing the talents of Kristine Ewald and Deanna Barwich, there was a big hole to be filled in the middle for our roster,” commented Head Coach Dennis Bokenfohr. “A couple of months ago we signed Kierra Noot and now we are excited to announce that Kayla Bruce has committed to play for the UFV Cascades next season. She is coming off a very successful season where she played for the Briercrest Clippers. Kayla brings a great attitude and excellent work ethic to the court each day.”
Katie Bakgaard, an extreme talent out of Calgary and graduate of Calgary Christian High School, will also join the Cascades next fall. Katie enters into the Human Kinetics program at UFV, starting in September. A 6’0” powerful outside hitter, Katie received the Female Athlete of the Year award in 2009, and was the assistant captain in her final year at Calgary Christian. As well as a great talent on the court, Katie was an honour-roll student throughout all of high school.
“I chose UFV for post-secondary education because of the location and the outstanding human kinetics program offered,” noted Katie. “I want to become a Cascade because I cannot imagine being in school without being involved in sports. I have always been involved in athletics because I am passionately driven in that aspect of my life. I have an extreme love for the game of volleyball.”
