ABBOTSFORD, BC- University of the Fraser Valley Athletics has much to boast about after a very successful year for its athletes and teams.
“Each team demonstrated immense skill, determination and heart as they made their way through tough schedules and fierce competition,” says Rick Nickelchok, UFV Athletics director. “Along the way, many individuals and teams earned awards with their outstanding performance, and deserve to be recognized.
Top honours were bestowed upon Jane Meadwell, women’s basketball, and Zeon Gray, men’s basketball, who were named the most outstanding female athlete and most outstanding male athlete respectively.
To go along with the top award, Meadwell, the top scorer in Canada West this year, was also named the team’s most valuable player.
The men’s basketball team had a great season, and two players were singled out as two of the top players in Canada West. Zeon Gray was named as a first-team all-star, while Joel Friesen made his way onto the all-rookie team. Kyle Grewal was named the most valuable player for the Cascades, while Jasper Moedt earned the most improved player award on the season.
The women’s soccer team had many highlights this past season, with two individuals selected as standouts for their performance in the last campaign. Kristen Vanderpauw earned the most valuable player award, while Maddie Vaughn finishes her inaugural season as the rookie of the year.
The men’s soccer team possesses two Canada-West all-stars, as James Giebelhaus and Robbie Fadden each made their way onto the second-team. The team awards doubled Fadden’s hardware, as he also won the most valuable player award. His teammate Trevor O’Neill earned himself the rookie of the year honour, after an extremely consistent and dominating season.
The men’s golf team had another tremendous year, earning the BCCAA gold medal. They currently reign as the BC provincial champions for the second year in a row. Each member of the golf team played significant roles in its success. Erin Pauls took home the most valuable player award, while Mitch Lock brought in the team leadership award.
The men’s volleyball program had an exceptional year as a team and as individuals. Joel Ewald was named as a first-team all-star, while teammate Daryl Wiebe earned second-team honours. Wiebe was also chosen as the most valuable player, while Jason Togeretz was named most inspirational player for the season.
Kristine Ewald and Brittany Steward of women’s volleyball earned BCCAA second-team all star accolades, while Jenna Evans jumped to a great start in her career as a Cascade, as she earned her way onto the all-rookie team. The team awards went to Erin Burns, most valuable player and Kristine Ewald, team leadership/community service award.
The UFV Rowing Team excelled in competition and in the classroom. With a GPA of 3.62, the Rowing squad captured the President’s Athletic Shield leader award. Lianne Graham took home the Jen Simpson athletic leadership award (scholarship), Courtney Landsiedel earned the most valuable player honour, while Becky Hildebrand was named the most improved player on the season.
