Cascade rowers sprung into UVic’s Spring Sprints with gusto this past weekend, March 6th & 7th, at Elk Lake, Victoria. It was a very deep field of competitors as Canadian National Team Coaches were putting new team invitees through the races as well.
“Our varsity rowing team showed a lot of fortitude in these races. They took full advantage of rowing with the top U23’s in the west, and showed some impressive results.” commented UFV rowing coach Liz Chisholm.
Courtenay Landsiedel (pictured) (Abbotsford) placed 2nd in her heat, to make the Finals, placing 6th overall in the Open Womens 1x. Courtenay, then partnered with Jamie McKeen(Chilliwack) in the Open Womens 2x, later on Sunday. The two of them rowed a very exciting race, placing a close 3rd, next to Rowing Canada’s development crews. Jamie and Courtenay 7:51.6.
Becky Hildebrandt (Abbotsford) and Lianne Graham(Maple Ridge), stayed with the pack of Lightweight Womens 2x’s, throughout 1700m of the 1850m course, only to be thwarted at the finish line by some misplaced officials call, coming in a very close 6th.
This year’s recruits had a terrific weekend, with the men’s team taking the top two placings in the Novice Mens 4x’s, then first place in the Junior Varsity Mens 4+’s, and first place in the Novice Mens 8+’s, beating out UVic, SFU and U of A’s crews.
