Abbotsford, B.C.—The University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team is on a roll heading into the playoffs. UFV started the weekend with a dominate 104-79 victory over Trinity Western University Friday night in Abbotsford, and completed the weekend sweep Saturday with another convincing victory (90-71).
“A second straight complete team effort is leaving the guys on this team with a great feeling as we go into playoffs” Stated head coach Barnaby Craddock. “We know how tough our division is, so to nab one of the 3 playoff spots, and head into the post season with the momentum from this weekend’s two wins is a good accomplishment”.
The Cascades took control of the game gaining a 21-13 first quarter advantage, and never looked back as they extended the lead to 12 at the half, and 27 midway through the 4th quarter.
Scoring was spread around, with four Fraser Valley players hitting double digits. Sam Freeman (2nd year, guard, Burnaby, BC) contributed 11 points for the Cascades, going a perfect four for four from the field in a limited 18 minutes due to early foul trouble. Guards Zeon Gray and Joel Friesen picked up the slack, and the two playmaking guards combined for 43 points. A barrage of Zeon Gray’s team leading 25 points came during a run in the third quarter that all but put the game out of reach. Friesen, who was playing with limited mobility after rolling his ankle early in the game, contributed some key 3rd and 4th quarter hoops as well.
The Envision Athletic Centre’s ‘Pita Pit’ player of the game however was UFV’s Kyle Grewal (pictured). The athletic slashing post player added 23 points while shooting 8 for 10 from the field, but perhaps more importantly was a key defender on the Spartans leading scorer Jacob Doerkson who was limited to 9 points for the second straight game.
The Cascades shot 62 per cent from the floor in the second half, and 55 per cent for the game.
The Trinity Western Spartans who will head off to UBC for their last league game on Saturday, were led in scoring by Tonner Jackson with 14 points and Niko Monachini with 13.
The Cascades have finished their regular season schedule, finishing in third place in the Pacific Division at 11-7, and will now wait to see who their opponent will be in the first round of Canada West playoffs.
