UFV’s Cascades Rowing Team competed Sunday, February 8th, at the University of Victoria’s Monster Erg Indoor Rowing competition. This erg contest, hosted by UVic, is an official satellite event of the World Indoor Rowing Championships, held in Boston, Massachusetts, each year. Four qualifiers with the most competitive times could win airfare to the competition south of the border.

Rowers test themselves individually when they “row” a distance of two kilometers on the ergs. It’s run as a video game-type setup as they compete via satellite with rowers in the major rowing regions; Toronto, Regina, Montreal and Halifax.

Courtenay Landsiedel placed 3rd in the very tough category of Senior A (23-28yrs) Womens, with a time of 7:15.3 – a personal best. Jamie McKeen, also posted a personal best in the U23, Lightweight Womens category., 8:04.0

Spencer Landsiedel, 6th, in the U23 category, with a time of 6:27.0

For those new to rowing it’s a chance to test themselves against the best, and to see where their winter land-training has taken them. UFV’s Novice Men’s team has jumped into this opportunity with both feet, with some promising results that should transfer into their boat training very well.

5th, Spencer Koop: 6:30.4

6th, Bryan Siemens: 6:31.4

8th, Jason Thompson: 6:35.6

Scott Micona, Caleb Davisson, Emmett Campbell also posting their best 2km time.

Novice Women

Ciana Morrison, Bethany Whitehead, Amanda Doucette, and Carleigh Reid

On-water competitions for UFV rowers will start the spring’s racing with the Elk Lake Sprints, hosted by UVic, March 6 & 7th @ Elk Lake.
