VICTORIA – Kayla Dykstra scored 16 points and Kristen Hughes added 15 to lead the UVic Vikes women’s basketball team to their fifth straight victory, defeating the Fraser Valley Cascades 71-49.
A dominating first half shooting performance, in which the out-shot the visitors 51 to 18 percent, set the stage for a UVic victory. The Vikes led 40-20 at halftime, and cruised through the second to improve to 10-4 in Canada West conference play. The Cascades fell to 1-13.
Dykstra led the Vikes in scoring for the eighth time this season with a 16-point effort. The young Fraser Valley post players were no match for CIS Player of the Year, who also collected eight rebounds and gave the Vikes a 37-27 advantage on the glass.
Vanessa Forstbauer added 13 points and was impressed by her team’s shooting performance. “I think we were moving the ball pretty well. When they were pressuring us we looked for our drives and when the help came we kicked it out to our shooters and our shooters were really on tonight.”
Canada West leading scorer Jane Meadwell exceeded her season average, netting 21 points, for the game high, on 5-16 shooting. Meadwell is a former teammate of Forstbauer’s at Chiliwack Secondary.
The same two teams will rematch Saturday night with a 5 p.m. tip-off at McKinnon Gym. The game is the annual “Shoot for the Cure” with the Vikes raising money and awareness to fight breast cancer.
